How do you remove the plastic sleeve on the gear stick in my peugeot 206?

The white plastic sleeve (if that's what you mean) under the gear knob, if so it's stuck on. I sawed vertically from top to bottom and peeled it until came off, other than that I don't think there's a way to take it off undamaged.
