As odd as it may seem, the frightening woman who appears in nightmares most often represents a part of the dreamer's own self. This figure could be the dreamer's "shadow" self, containing parts of the personality that must be repressed, denied or carefully controlled. The shadow contains "naughty" urges and "bad thoughts" that would cause trouble if expressed openly. Often the shadow contains impulses that the person would never admit as part of the self. Dreams of the shadow self always are terrifying, but they do not foretell any events or have meaning beyond an encounter with one's own dark side.
