What is the definition for good manners?

Good manners depend on where you are and who you are with. Most people feel their culture has a lock on good manners however American tourists are often surprised when travelling when they are seen as uncouth when they do such things as:

• touch a child's head
  
• shake hands with the host's wife
  
• open a present in the presence of the giver
• thanking a servant
• offer gifts with the left hand
  
• talk to the English queen
• show the bottom of their feet when sitting
  
• ask Thais why they have a king
  
• wear shorts into a church
  
• smile in public
  

all of which are bad manners in some part of the world.

Good manners comes down to behaving in a way that does not make others uncomfortable
