The larynx serves three major purposes, protecting the airway, phonation, and respiration. During eating and drinking, the muscles and folds of the larynx work together to funnel food away from the trachea. False vocal cords are also essential to preventing air from escaping from the lungs when necessary. The true vocal cords are held close together to speak and separated to breathe.
