Health insurance, in one of its various forms, is intended to pay covered expenses as a result of an illness or injury. The expenses can be incurred as an inpatient, as an outpatient, but in all events, the contract defines the terms of the insurer's reimbursement or payment.
A health insurance policy does not pay a death benefit. It will also generally exclude benefits for a self-inflicted, non-accidental injury, such as an unsuccessful suicide attempt for which medical attention is required.
