Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was the President of Tunisia at the beginning of 2011. Fouad Mebazaa became the acting President on January 15. Moncef Marzouki was appointed interim President on December 13.
Fouad Mebazaa was the acting President of Tunisia for most of 2011. Mebazza became the acting president of Tunisia on 2011 January 15, after long time president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was forced into exile in Saudi Arabia following protests. The previous constitution stated that an election must be held in between 45-60 days of Ali's resignation; however, due to continued unrest this was impossible. The government was forced to create a new constitution. Under this new constitution, they appointed Marzouki as President until the next presidential election.
