Who was George Ferris?

Born George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., on February 14 (yes, a valentine baby) 1859,

he was an American engineer most famous for his creation of the what is now a common carnival ride that we call the Ferris wheel named after him. He created this ride for the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition.
