1983 Honda nighthawk 650 voltage stays at 12 when you check it with a meter inturn the new battery needed recharged do you have any ideas what to check next?

Sounds like a diode is stuck on in the alternator. Have that checked.. if the alternators metal case is magnetized when the engine is off and the key is off, with a charged battery ... then that is it for sure. check the voltage regulator
