What country was Berlin in during the cold war?

It was effectively the "border" between the western powers and the communist world. West Germany was an American ally, whereas East Germany was a Soviet ally, and the border between the two was heavily fortified. Many thought that Germany (Berlin in particular) would be where the first shots of a U.S. vs U.S.S.R. war would be fired.
