What is the purpose of an arch?

An arch redistributes some of the weight of a keystone so a doorway can be wider that if the builders used a simple lintel (a piece that goes straight from one column to another). There are several kinds of arches: the Roman, or semicircular, arch; the Gothic and the Hittite (or parabolic) arches.
