Roman transport, in contrast to today's transport was extremely slow. Their goods and people could only travel as fast as their animals could move. At sea they fared a little better if the wind was right, but just as slow as land travel if oars had to be used. In the city of Rome, there were no wheeled vehicles allowed during daylight hours, so people and goods had to be carried in litters, which were slow moving due to the crowded streets.
