What are the possible causes for the hold light flashing off and on in the dash of a 1989 Nazda 929 auto trans with hold button on shifter stick?

According to the owner's manual, the light is flashing because the transaxle has an electrical problem. Continuing to drive with it in this condition could cause damage to the unit.
