A: A group of Christians who wore large crosses on their clothing were known as Crusaders. During the medieval Crusades (from the late 11th century onwards), European Christian warriors marked themselves by sewing large red crosses onto their garments. This distinctive symbol showed their religious mission to reclaim the Holy Land and visibly identified them as soldiers fighting for Christ.
