Eisenhower decided to run for president as a moderate Republican who supported the New Deal. Democrat Ronald Reagan, who later became a Republican, supported Eisenhower even though he had been a Truman supporter in 1948. Other Democrats backed Eisenhower as well. Truman lost the New Hampshire Primary to Senator Estes Kefauver. Afterwards, Truman withdrew from the 1952 race. He was the last president who could serve more than ten years in the White House.
