How did the soldiers know when World War 2 ended?

It was announced by the various supreme commands. This announcement was passed down to all units of the armed forces, and each unit commander would then have informed the men and women under his or her command. However, all units would generally have been informed beforehand that the order would be issued at a certain time, when official surrenders were signed, so they would have been ready for it.
