Does a thumb ring mean you're gay?

In communities where being openly gay can be dangerous, gay people usually adopt some discrete signal. Then the Word gets out so the signal gets changed. (When I was in high school, the signal -- supposedly -- was wearing green socks on Thursday.) But whatever the signal is, it's just a way to start a conversation: "I like that ring. Where'd you get it?" If the guy is gay (and if he's interested in you) one thing will lead to another.
