There are letter codes attached to the numbers 2 through 9, the same as originally used to designate named telephone exchanges in the early days of telephones.
- ABC
- DEF
- GHI
- JKL
- MNO
- PQRS
- TUV
- WXYZ
The letters have become used to identify otherwise innocuous numbers, e.g. a phone number such as 555-5879 might be used by a trial lawyer because the number can be easily remembered as 555-JURY.
