How would the election of 1860 cause the civil war?

Lincoln was elected on a ticket of no new slave-states. The South was doomed to be outvoted in Congress, which would keep passing laws that favoured the North. So the South broke away, feeling that its cotton wealth alone would be enough, on which to build a separate nation.
