Why did steamboat Arabia sink?

The steamboat Arabia sank in 1856 after hitting a submerged tree trunk on the Missouri River. The impact caused a breach in the hull, leading to the vessel quickly filling with water and sinking. The wreckage was buried under layers of silt and mud, preserving it for over a century before it was discovered in 1988.
