What does ''average number of people per square mile'' mean?

This is a measure of average population density. If the United States has a population of 300 million people and is 3,537,441 square miles, we can say that the United States has an average number of 85 people per square mile. Compare this to the country of Bangladesh, which has a population of 160 million but is also only 55,598 square miles. Bangladesh has over 2800 people per square mile!
