The area of old Boston that has been the least altered by landfill is the North End. This historic neighborhood has retained much of its original street layout and architecture, largely because it was less impacted by the extensive land reclamation that transformed other parts of the city. The North End's narrow streets and historic buildings reflect its colonial past, providing a glimpse into the early development of Boston.
