Honey, a new moon and a total lunar eclipse are about as similar as a grape and a watermelon. A new moon occurs when the moon is between the Earth and the sun, but you can't see it in the sky because it's not lit up. On the other hand, a total lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon and giving it a reddish tint—kind of like giving it a funky new dye job.
