According to legend, the Trojan War began due to a dispute among the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite over who was the fairest. They asked Paris, a Trojan prince, to judge the contest, and he ultimately chose Aphrodite, who promised him the love of the most beautiful mortal woman, Helen. Helen, however, was already married to Menelaus, the king of Sparta.
