What happened to Muhammad Ali's gold medal?

It was thrown in a river by Ali to show his level of seriousness for equal rights. It was his first ever gold medal , that he received at the age of 18. It was then returned to him 36 years later at an Olympic Basketball Game during halftime. The NBA game was the US Dream team against Yukoslovia.
