How long does it take to process your tax return?

If you file your return electronically, the IRS will acknowledge receipt within 24 hours. The status of your refund, if you are getting one, will be available online within 72 hours of that acknowledgement. If you mail in a paper return, it will take 3-4 weeks for the IRS to process it and make your refund information available online.
