What did megellan seek to prove when he sent out to Spain in 1519?

Magellan sought to prove that it was possible to reach the Spice Islands by sailing westward around the globe, by discovering and mapping a western sea route to the lucrative spice trade in the East Indies. This voyage ultimately led to the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
