When air is swallowed, it enters the esophagus and can travel down into the stomach. Some of this air may be released through burping, while the rest can be absorbed into the bloodstream or may eventually pass into the intestines and be expelled as gas. Swallowing air, a process known as aerophagia, can lead to discomfort and bloating if excessive.
