What is the difference between parliamentary and presidential democracy?

In a presidential democracy, the people directly (or indirectly, like in the US) elect their president or chief executive. The executive branch is separate from the legislative branch of government.

In a parliamentary democracy, the people only elect the members of parliament, who then elect a prime minister to serve as the head of government, and members of the parliament are also in the executive sector of government (ie...ministers)
