instead of brushing normally, straight down.. you go the other way. brush up, toward your skull as opposed to down. it's like "teasing" your hair. It is a styling technique where you take a small section of hair, most commonly at the crown of the head, hold the hair straight up, then use a brush or a comb to push the hair towards the scalp, using several pushing motions until most of the hair (not all) is now at the base of the scalp. You would then gently smooth the remainder of the hair over the top of the "back brushed' -- or "ratted", or "teased" -- hair, creating height.
