Banaba is an Island which is now part of Republic of Kiribati while the majority of Banaban people were moved to Rabi Island which is part of Fiji after World War II in December 1945.
Technically the Banaban people on Rabi Island still have legal and landownership rights over Banaba Island Under Chapter 9 of Kiribati Constitution even if they do reside in Fiji.
Banabans living in Rabi Island have autonomy under Banaban Settlement act under Fiji Constitution.
