DDE and Mamie retired to a working farm adjacent to the Gettysburg battlefield. In 1967, they donated the farm to the National Park Services. In 1980, the property was opened to the public as the "Eisenhower National Historic Site."

DDE did not completely retire from public life; he did speak at the RNC in 1964, and appeared with Barry Goldwater during his compaign.
