Why was Hephaestus so ugly?

Hephaestus was lame, which was something the ancient Greeks considered grotesque. As to how he became lame, there is a difference of opinion. Some said he was born that way, and Hera threw him of Mt. Olympus in disgust. Other people said he was thrown out and became lame because of injuries he got in the fall.
