  • Quakers were named because they quaked in the presence of God.
  • It was started by a man named George Fox in the 1600's.
  • Women have always had preaching/pastoral privileges under the Quaker system.
  • Initially, they waited in silence for the Lord to speak a message to someone, then that person would be responsible to relate it tot the others.
  • Quakers wore gray to live without drawing attention to themselves...although eventually, it became a recognized oddity that drew attention to them.
  • A Quaker developed root beer in response to the need for an adult beverage meeting the requirements of temperance.
  • As they were often thrown into prison, they became instrumental in prison reform.
  • The first Quaker to America was hanged in Boston Commons, Mary Dyer.
  • Quaker men, conscripted as "conscientious objectors" in military service, were used as nutrition/starvation experiments.
