recorders don't make sound, they provide a modulated electric current to the speaker which make the air move and your ears pick up that movement of air. the air from your voice modulates an electric current that is stored as a pattern in the device which is reproduced. magnetic tape has a bias on it which stores the data to be reproduced. too big a question to be covered in it's entirety on here.
