What special qualities is Saint Christopher known for?

Christoper is one of many legendary saints who may have not existed. We know virtually nothing about him except for legends. If he was what tradition tells us, a person who carried travellers across a river, he must have been large, athletic and powerful man. He was also steadfast in his religion as he is said to have died as a martyr.
