Why did the ability to walk upright and the development of the opposable thumbs represent important breakthroughs for early hominids?

Walking upright meant that only the feet were needed for locomotion freeing the hands and arms for other purposes such as carrying while moving. The opposable thumbs allowed for easier manipulation of tools and other objects.
