Madam C. J. Walker, who was born with the name Sarah Breedlove in 1867, was never a slave because slavery ended in Louisiana in January 1863 with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Her parents, Owen and Minerva Breedlove, and her older siblings were born as enslaved people. She was the first child in her family to be born as a free person.
