What was the philosophy of the league of nations?

The League of Nations was created by President Woodrow Wilson in 1918, following World War I. It was created to promote peace throughout the world, though it failed largely due to the fact that the Senate did not approve of the Treaty of Versailles, meaning that the United States was not actually a part of the League of Nations. Being one of the most powerful and influential nations in the world at the time, America's lack of participation caused the league to fall apart.

Woodrow created it thinking that the nations would be able to get together and talk through any issues that they were having in order to prevent warfare. He also hoped for a sense of security within the league against any outside forces which might threaten any one of the nations. The United States, however, feared that this would interfere with their isolationism and therefore voted against joining the League of Nations, though they did keep an unofficial observer at League meetings.
