The three stages of knighthood helped insure that only the finest could become knights. Starting as early as seven, children serve in the manor. They learn to serve, obey and learn various skills like hunting and riding houses. Becoming a teenager marks the beginning of the next stage; becoming a squire. They learn how to take care of their equipment, learn tactics for battle, and begin formal weapon training. This stage lasts until the squire can prove himself worthy for knighthood. After the accolade, the ceremony in which the squire is awarded knight status, the knight is now responsible for protecting his lord's land.
