Well you get a sore throat and you develop a fever and your tongue is swollen and very sore, at this point you should have made your way to the hospital. If you haven't the next step would be for the body to go into shock and start shutting down due to septic shock (at this point it's touch and go if you will make it if you haven't gotten to the hospital by now) The next step is for the body to start shutting down and organ failure is almost assured, death is around the corner. This can happen in a window as tight as 48 ~ 72 hours.
But you are a smart bunny and are taking care of your piercing with a good oral rinse twice a day and ice for the swelling. Ensuring you brush your teeth twice a day to keep your mouth happy and healthy. The swelling goes down in two weeks and you get a step down (shorter) barbell in your tongue and you stay on your aftercare for another 4 weeks till you have a good light heal established. And you know if you have any issues with your piercing you will go back to see your piercer asap. Right!, Good I thought so.
