What does it mean when you go to court in a custody battle and in the end the judge says theyre going to have to file a written?

Nothing.

Perhaps the Judge mentioned filing some sort of Writ. Or perhaps the Judge requested that each side present written briefs on some issue. If you have an attorney, ask your attorney.
