The symbol of today's Santa was created by the Coca-Cola company. In the early to mid 1900s the US was becoming home to many immigrants, each having their own gift giving figure, such as La Bufanna (Italian "Santa" but female). The Coke company took this as an opportunity to market the image of today's Santa with the red suit & white beard on a jolly old man.
