How do you send a message on Gmail?

There is a contact list on the left hand side.

Scroll over the contact you would like to send a text to - their box will slide out to the right, and at the bottom right corner there will be an option "Video & more". Click it. Third from the top of the list that will come out of that, is "send sms"- click that.
