How much engine oil does 1985 Honda nighthawk 650 take?

After draining the oil and replacing the oil filter, it takes 2.3 quarts to fill it. The owner's manual that I bought from some bike part website that appears to be a copy of the original manual says it holds 3.4 quarts.....There is no way....at about 3 quarts, you are over filling the crankcase. Stop at 2.3 quarts and run the engine for 2-3 minutes and check the level.
