How were Jem and Scout attacked?

In the popular book "To Kill a Mockingbird", Jem and Scout are the children to a white lawyer who defends a black man accused of raping a white female. On the way home from a play one night, while Scout is dressed in a giant ham costume, the kids are attacked by the father of the raped girl, who is actually the guilty man. They are saved by Boo Radley, a man believed to be the scariest man in town because he is never seen.
