Why did Edgar Allen Poe marry a twelve year old?

Edgar Allan Poe did not marry a twelve-year-old. He married his first cousin, Virginia Clemm, when she was thirteen and he was twenty-seven. The marriage was legal at the time and was a common practice among their social circle.
