Don't get too friendly with Gelsemium sempervirens if you use it in ornamental (or any other) applications. It turns out that the toxic strychnine-related alkaloids gelsemine and gelseminine are present thoughout the plant. That means all of it. You definitely don't want to ingest it, but contact with the sap should also be avoided as it can cause skin irritation in those sensitive to the toxins. Even the nectar is toxic, and honeybees that work the plant can kill much, most or all of their hive. Minimize contact with the plant and wear gloves and long sleeves if you have to "wade in" to manage it. Wikipedia has additional information, and a link is provided.
