Who originally controlled Texas?

Texas was originally controlled by various Indigenous peoples before becoming a Spanish territory in the 16th century. It remained under Spanish rule until 1821 when Mexico gained independence from Spain, making Texas a part of Mexico. In 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Texas, which later joined the United States in 1845.
