England was a Catholic nation and Henry VIII was a very Catholic ruler, even named Defender of the Faith. However his wife Catherine of Aragon did not have a son. Henry chose to annul the marriage to marry someone else. The Pope said no to an annulment because Catherine was related to the King of Spain. Finally Henry VIII made his own religion. When he died, his first daughter Mary tried to restore Catholicism but when Bloody Mary died, Elizabeth I restored the Church of England and because she lived a long time, the Church of England became very strong.
