What is the definition of settlement?

The verb "to settle" has three usual meanings : to sink or compact, to decide, or to establish new residence (e,g, to colonize).

Therefore "settlement" can mean :

• part of a water treatment facility, where solids are precipitated (also sediment pond)
• an arrangement, monetary or otherwise, agreed upon to decide a legal case or dispute
• establishment of residence in a new location, or a community established by settlement
